All the best Brightonites.

We wish all our Students the very best for their Annual Exams. Here is a poem by our faculty Mrs Sayunkta Gandhi which she has penned down for the students. We thank her for her contribution.

Wake up

Wake up as the morning is new and sun is shining on the dew.

Wake up as the wishes are more and yesterday's problems are few.

Wake up to rise again as the fresh start is replacing the freak outs.

Wake up as today might be the best day of this year as the people who are making it best are also waking up too.

Wake up to see the texture of dawn as the dusk is already taken the plight in your direction.

Wake up as somebody is praying for your welfare as those hands are always asking of few things from God.

Wake up to give one smile at least to one person as there are so many to smile back to you.

Wake up because I want to see the spark in you as opportunities have already started knocking your door.

Wake up because I waited for the night to be over as I can not start my day without saying that " I LOVE You. You are MY STRENGTH, .I WANT TO BE YOUR STRENGTH".

Wake up as I want to hear something similar too.

Wake up my child .

How to Teach Children to ApologizeNov 2018

Rahul broke the vase which was brought by Riya . She brought that vase from a faraway place that too with great love. Riya felt as if she lost her most expensive thing. She felt quite angry but could say anything as she felt repentance on Rahul’s face and heard “ Oh! I’m Sorry , I couldn’t realize when it fell down”. All she could say was “It’s okay, It could have happened through anyone.”

Isn’t it amazing that “I’m Sorry” are just two simple words, yet pack such an unbelievable punch? They have the ability to mend a hurt just by dancing across our lips in a sincere manner. Yet, those two little words are the most difficult words for us to utter at times.

Apologizing helps your child accept responsibility for a wrong and provides a tool to make things right again. It helps the child dig himself out of a hole. It clears the air, helps heal the relationship, and gives it a new beginning. To teach children to apologize, try these tips:

1. Model apologizing

When you’ve acted wrongly, admit it. Apologize when you overreact: “I’m sorry I yelled at you. You didn’t deserve that outburst. I’ve had a hard day.” I’ve said this to my children many times. Everyone makes mistakes; that’s life. Teach children to apologize by showing them that everyone apologizes; that makes life better. These are valuable lessons for a child to learn. Saying “sorry” to your child is not a sign of weakness, but of strength. A child who has never apologized won’t understand the apology process, and more than likely he’ll refuse, turning a potentially beneficial moment into a standoff with hurt feelings.

2. Forgiveness follows apologies

Apologizing and forgiving need to happen after someone gets hurt or offended. For most everyday squabbles we tell our kids that we want them to “make peace” with whomever they are at odds with. It doesn’t need to be a formal apology scene. We leave it up to them to figure out what “make peace” means and how to do it. Sometimes they use words, sometimes they don’t. But we all know if they have or haven’t. In order to live in the same house together, siblings need to be at peace with one another. Apology without forgiveness is an incomplete process and part of how you teach children to apologize. For real healing to happen the one offended needs to “drop the charges” by saying “that’s okay” or “I forgive you.”

3. Stop manipulating feelings and orchestrate sincerity

Some children learn to parrot an “excuse me” or “I’m sorry” within a millisecond of the offense to avoid being “squealed on” or to get themselves off the hook quickly if parents force apologies. As you teach children to apologize, remember: parents can’t force feelings. Only the child knows how he feels. Forcing feelings can teach your child to fake apologies that it’s okay to be insincere, or that forgiveness has to be an instant thing which is not real life. Depending on the ages of the children, their temperaments, the circumstances, and the emotions that may be flaring, a cooling-off period before an apology will be needed. A ten-year-old who slaps her sister for vicious teasing must deal with wounded pride before she’ll be able to remember how wrong it is to slap. It’s your job as a parent to make sure the apology happens so both children can start again with good feelings between them. But, you cannot make it happen. What you can do is model and instruct

“When people are at peace with each other they feel better inside.”

The Brighton KindleWe have been constantly asking ourselves, why are so many of us believe there is something missing in our schooling today. In our countless discussions with parents, academicians, attending industry events we are all of the same opinions that the action should shift from bags to hands, from desks to doing and from theory to practicals. Brighton has constantly tried to create a system of pedagogy to teach its students in the most interesting, engrossing and through the play-way method as possible. To take this agenda forward, we have started a program called, ‘Brighton - Kindle’ the Work Education Curriculum in our classroom.

The Kindle program will look into aspects which fall under everyone should at least know this domain and makes it into a systematic activity led curriculum for our students. The Kindle will teach students topics like - How to fix a bulb?, How to clean and maintain Air Conditioner (AC), How to book a train ticket, How to make a phone call (etiquettes), Table Manners, Right way of cleaning a toilet, How to prepare Tea, How to fix a Bicycle, How to fix a nail in the wall, How to pack luggage, How to fold and iron clothes etc. The first such initiative was conducted with the students of Class VIII where they learnt how to put covers on their notebooks and books.

We strongly believe, this is what education should first do, Teach the obvious. We expect our parents to help us by giving us feedback on this initiative to make this into a wholesome and healthier curriculum.

Stop Bullying!Stop BullyingStop “Kids will be kids” is a famous saying suggesting that bullying is a normal part of growing up. Yet with beatings, death threats, and 24-hour harassment via technology, bullying has become a dangerous, life-threatening epidemic. Children cannot get away from it, which has led to many suicides. Schools are struggling to take a stand against bullying, which can become easier with the support of parents.

It’s important to first understand the definition of bullying.

Despite common myths, bullying is not a normal part of childhood or a rite of passage, nor is it ever acceptable. Bullying occurs repeatedly over time, is intended to harm another person, and occurs when there is a real or perceived imbalance of power.

It can take many forms including: verbal, physical, social, emotional and cyber bullying. Bullying is a learned behavior that can develop in any child, regardless of socioeconomic status, religion, race, etc., and occurs with both boys and girls. Fortunately, because bullying is a learned behaviour, it can be changed with intervention.

Here are some tips to help you reduce bullying

Daily Conversations

Regular conversations with your child about their friends, interests, and activities are the windows to what he feels and thinks. Celebrate successes of the day, and support your child when he is struggling. If you suspect your child is a victim, reassure him that it’s not his fault, it’s not okay, and you are there to help him. On the other hand, if you suspect your child may be bullying others, correct the behaviour. Help your child learn to consider the perspective of the other child and how bullying impacts the other child.

2. Encourage Extracurricular Activities

Help your child participate in activities, hobbies, or interests. When kids are involved in extracurricular activities, they have opportunities to develop friendships, and boost confidence. Confident children are less likely to tolerate bullying or feel compelled to bully others.

3. Teach Coping Strategies

Just like adults, children experience strong emotions ranging from anger and frustration to sadness. Learning to effectively talk about these emotions and ways to manage them (e.g. drawing, listening to music, hobbies, journaling, etc.) can curb maladaptive behaviour such as aggression and isolation, which put kids at risk of bullying or being bullied. If your child struggles to cope with his emotions, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for assistance. School counselors can help you address such concerns, and can to help you access other resources if needed.

4. Communication with Teachers/Leaders

Develop relationships with your child’s teachers and any other leaders involved in your child’s life (i.e. coaches, instructors). These individuals often spend as much or more time with children than parents do. Therefore, they may notice changes in behaviour or problems among groups of children. Additionally, strong parent-teacher communication sends a message to your child that the stakeholders in his life care about him and will support him.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

Bullying can be reduced. Be a Model to your child. They follow you and look up to you. These tips will help decrease and prevent bullying.

Brighton Dialogues is published by Brighton International School every month as a info-letter to all the parents. This was published for the month of Oct 2018.
