5 Changes we will see in the world of Education in the near FUTURE

The biggest change which has seeped into each of out lives has been Technology. Education seems to lead the foray in terms of sector where technology has created huge paradigm shifts, not only in terms of repository but also in the mode of dissemination. I strongly believe we educators are just at the tip of iceberg and find ourselves at a very important part of this journey of evolution. Here are some of the changes which I foresee in the near future;

Handwriting

1. Hand-writing on a decline – Would we want our students to hand write something, really? As they say in corporate lingo, this is age of screen-agers. A screen is always nearby and would be present much m
ore in the very near future. Slowly in some time the onus of an individual on writing manually and doing a good job off it will wither away.

Qualities-Of-A-Good-Teacher

2. Teachers as only Facilitator? Need an answer to a question, not necessarily the answer will be asked from a human. Students with the help of web are finding anaqswes to their  queries. The best part, machine doesnt remark – What a silly question.

bags3. Bags will shrink, Hardbound books will perish –  Just met a representative from a company which has come up with E-reader for schools. This E Reader will have all the books prescribed by the school in digital format. Have also met a company which is making homework and tests to move on cloud computing. With all this, paper books and bags will evolve into something else.

4. Urban – Semi Urban – Rural divide will decrease and possibly disappear. JFor long there has been a huge difference in quality from a Metro to a Non – Metro, but with technology and with the help of web, this gulf is slowly bridging.  I am sure there would be a time where we all will speak, learn and study in the same language.

Social skills5. Academic Schools and Social Schools – Newer formats can emerge in school education, with VSAT technology a students can get home schooled and parents will send him to a place where he can hone his/her social skills. Though a little far fetched, but a possibility certainly exists.

  1. Perspective is a funny thing, the connotation of the article is one of progress, yet as an educator of over 31 years in biology, administration, and athletics, I see the above trends as not only negative, but harmful. Handwriting was once an art that was by all means three dimensional, even though the final product lay before you on a sheet of paper. Even the “hen scratch” of young boys carried such a testament to the personality and physicality of its writer. Now, words with correct spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure are done for you even BEFORE you finish your thought– brainwashing at microsofts finest. Where is the labor, where is the learning, it is as in Miranda Lamberts song suggests, automatic. We wonder why our kids are so impatient and lazy, why wonder!
    Teachers as only a facilitator? This, in my opinion, only works for less than 5% of the student population. And that is only if that 5% has a stable home life with two parents. Without constant adult interaction and guidance, students will become a river and avoid anything that seems difficult. One must understand that with the majority of our students from broken homes in one way or another, and teachers are often the only source of adult guidance in the lives of these latchkey children. We live in a world of keeping up with the jones s because we all must buy the newest plastic stuff from Walmart and I whatever from apple, so there is a great disconnect between parent and child—it is getting worse. In the past, only the more affluent school district counselors noticed this from rich parents — but now even urban children are being raised by iPads. As soon as a diaper changing app is made, we are finished as a species. If you are feeling bad, go hug your computer, see how much love you feel? Just don t ask males, they will let you know how much love or sex or something they get from the computer–a different conversation altogether, but real even though our society of lemmings fail to recognize that male apathy may be the most prevalent affliction, disease or disorder in the great USA today.
    Books disappearing, I don’t know what to say other than check our populations reading rate over the past 50 years and place technology advancement for the past 50 years and see the negative correlation. Books entice all the senses, e readers and tech screens are flat tasteless and devoid of emotion . Curl up with a good e reader? Says who– oh the makers of Apple say so?? They must be right.
    Urban, rural no divide???????? Teach everyone the same way, the same info, mass production of clones because the local differences and cultures do not know what is best for our children ( in my best robotic voice)— why does this common core crap not scaring more people???? Did no one else read 1984 or brave new world, or watch a boy and his dog or invasion of the body snatchers???
    Social skills through a computer, really, haven t you seen what Facebook and second life is doing now?????

  2. I understand the progress in technology and the benefits.
    But
    Sad —we will always need hand- writing and the enjoyment of putting our thoughts on paper. And also- the joy in holding a long text or book. It is not satisfying to everyone to read online online. And the source of information needs to be clarified and vetted better – although I realize that teachers are not always prepared to answer questions nor should they always do this.

    One great fear—is loss of power. If the grid fails all else is lost too for then.
